PostSubject: autobox question   Sun Mar 28, 2010 6:06 pm

Newbie on here, been lurking for a bit and looking at moving on to a Hiace after 4 years of Mazda Bongoing.

Test drove a 76,000 miler 1995 2.8 auto with selectable 4WD and hi/lo ratio.

Everything seemed to drive well, changes were smooth enough, gearbox oil was darkish red as expected, no burnt clutch smells but when accelererating hard (not an easy task on a 2.8 non turbo Laughing ) there's a fair bit of grumbling and whining in the lower gears (2nd and 3rd) but seems ok in o/d. The 'box is quiet enough during normal driving, it's just the noise under heavy load that I can't make out if its engine or gearbox.

I know the viscous fan makes a bit of a racket, especially when hot and that the air intake is just behind my right ear but this was roar/vibration/general unpleasantness until I reselected o/d and of course the revs came down and all was quiet again. The freewheel hubs were off and the 4wd was disconnected, so I assume there's no drive at all forward of the 'box in that situation?
There's also a slight propshaft "whine" on the overrun - not excessive but apparant........................

Any of the above seem "normal" on this setup - or am I looking at trouble? Thanks

PS..........anyone know the model number of the gearbox in the 2.8?

If you get vibes/rumble at or above certain rpm, check all the ball joints on the gearchange rods (under the van).....the vibes/noise used to seem like they were coming through the steering on mine...fill the gearchange link rod boots with grease and job done / all quiet
My loose joint was roughly near the air filter area near the exhaust.
I get some axle/gear whine...very very mild ...and only if I listen for it

Thank you!
I didn't get time to really test it and couldn't really work out if it was the 'box or not - spoke to an auto gearbox specialist today and he's never had a toyota one in bits in all the time he's been in business - a good sign!

Anyone removed the viscous fan and fitted an electric one to keep the noise down??

Never done it, but read its easy enough...'kenlowe kit with sensor' or local scrappies with a tape measure....you'll need a sensor so it knows when to kick in.
Do get under and rattle your gearchange links though.
Also you can jack up the front ..remove the 10mm bolt on the top front ball joint arm...fit a grease nipple...top up with a little grease (not too much or it fills the boot) and return the 10mm...may save a few bob in the future.......

Yep, didn't seem as sluggish as I thought it would be til I discovered a turbo lurking under the driver's seat! its an aftermarket one fitted to a 2.8 iron head - sits effortlessly at 70 on the motorway, doesn't shy away from hills and tops 90 when pushed on - I like it!

Thanks for the grease nipple tip chrisand hiace - bit too late on the offside unfortunately - top ball is worn. Where's best to get a top arm, or can you get the joint separately?

Worrying thing is it just passed an MOT 2 weeks ago Mad
