Ok this is not really a competition but just fun to add pics every now and then.

I guess I need more flex in my suspension (or difflocks)

Haha I would say it is not the most exciting detail of this photo but yes I have twin back doors, or ambulance doors, however you want to call them.
I guess they are more convenient to open them, but as a campervan the single big door going up may have its benefits.

Also these doors are quite rare to find new ones, and the ones I have aren't in the best shape (but they won't fall apart, they'll do fine)
But I can always bolt in the tailgate door.

On the beach in Denmark, there was a kyte festival. Swapped the Mud-terrains for Toyo Open Country A/T's and just dismantled the snorkel because of the long highway drive.

Yeah I run it with a compressor fridge, which also has a mini freezer inside. I never have to worry about it, always sufficient power. Also when not driving for ages.

Those roads look pretty hard core. How did the van handle?

Which engine have you got as hills and mine really don't mix well (2.8 diesel (no turbo) selectable 4x4)

The van handled it pretty good. The road from the last picture really required crawling in low-gearing and then first gear.
Sometimes I hit something, but that is usually downhill when the front suspension is traveling inwards. Uphill is even easier, if there is enough grip.
Good thing is, if you hit something, it is just the big beam under the radiator. That can take a hit, so you don't hit the axle/oil sump or so.

I have the 2.4, so the smaller version of your engine. For off-roading it is actually fine.
It is just hard to maintain speed on the highway when the highway is steep. Sometimes it just falls back and some new trucks just overtake you.

sweet. Nice to see what these little vans can do.

You seem to be at some altitude there. Any issues there?

I recently had quite a bit of smoke from mine getting over the Feldburg road in the Black Forest at 1200m. It's only unburnt fuel (doesn't use oil), but is annoying and I think it is more a case of me and the autobox than anything else as it was only when under load. dropping down gears is okay, but without a rev counter I tend to worry I am over revving.

Great scenery you get from your van!! Smooth tarmac only for my 2WD but interesting to see what the 4WD can do.

I thought you were going to stop for coffee at the top of the mountain with the cross, that looked like my ideal 'coffee inside the van with the view through the sliding door' moment Very Happy

I was probably at similar altitude, but 1200 meter is not really high. Maybe it is not the reason for what you were noticing.

We had our old Landcruiser (also 4 cilinder diesel without turbo) and we drove it to the highest roads. We drove that thing at 5600 meter altitude and it stil worked!
Of course from 4000 meters and up there is very little power, and you shouldn't put your foot down, there is no use as there will be too much fuel.
I guess it could've been noticable from 3000 meters and up, but you really got the feedback at higher altitudes.

So I don't count these kind of lower altitudes like anything serious Razz

Cheers. I didn't think we were that high either....

Pretty sure it is fuel. Timing is right and air filter was clean (and new good quality filter in the last 8k miles). Think I'll stick some injector cleaner through it. Maybe a bit gunged up after 20 years of pootling around Japan.

Been looking at some rev counters too, so I can drop down the gears without worry. Toyota's own seem to work off the fuel pump rather than the alternator, which is what I was expecting. Found a nice little aftermarket one that clamps on a fuel pipe.

Anyway, back to pretty pictures of Aces.

One thing to check is your inlet manifold if you have an EGR valve on the engine.
This reduces NOx for people at part power but also causes the inlet passages to become bunged up with a black oily slime. Just for extra fun the EGR valve may be located right at the back of the engine though... but you may be able to check from the inlet.

Thanks, don't think the 2.8D (3L) has an EGR though unless anyone knows different?

(edit: no sign of one on this diagram: http://japan-parts.eu/toyota/jp/1994/hiace-regiusace/lh119v-rrpes/4_711140_106_/tool-engine-fuel/1701_manifold#9033905012)
