I don't think they do normally.....and don't know where a second one would locate as standard.
I've heard some mention under the drivers seat...but that certainly would'nt work on my 2.8

You should'nt get 17.5 volt even with 2 batteries...13.7v running yes...12.8v or something switched off.

If you had 2 batteries they would be hooked up in parralel ...if the split charge to the leisure battery had somehow gone bizzare the volts would still produce that of 1xbattery....but would run for much longer as the amperage capacity would be around double

Possibly the alternator regulator has gone......(this is replaceable without a full new alternator).....if you are getting 17.5v running the battery will overcharge and warp the plates/destroy the battery.
If you are getting 17.5v with the engine off then yes there's another battery...(which must be wired back to front...ie: wrongly) or your mulimeter is not calibrated / faulty.

If there are 2 batteries then you'd be able to trace the wires from the alternator / main battery to find the 2nd....the 2nd would be hooked up with some fairly chunky wires to avoid voltage drop.
I don't think 2 batteries were standard fittment though as there was never any additional need on the standard supercustom....but camper type vans would likely have a 2nd.

I'm really no expert so I'd run it round to a friendly auto electrician / alternator specialist for comfirmation.

The thing to bear in mind that even with 20xbatteries..wired correctly its still fundamentally a 12v system.....24v you would only find on specialist military / emergency type vehicles and heavy commercials

Sounds like the regulator to me - 17.5v will also start to blow bulbs etc and, as Chris says, fry the battery in no time!

Don't know if this is relevant, but my '91 Custom, 3L engine, has two 12V batteries in parallel in the same compartment below/behind the passenger seat. It may be possible to put the meter probes in the wrong spot to get a misleading reading, don't know for sure. The camper battery is totally separate, below the rear seat.

As long as they're in parallel then the meter should only read battery voltage - around 12.8 off charge, nearer 14 when charging

MaIL in your 91 3.0 SC were the batterys located in the same compartment, one under the other or side by side....

In the same compartment, side by side Hathan.

@ Dandy - agreed, but without checking mine I was wondering if it was possible for Hathan to place meter probes in such a way that a series reading could be obtained. I don't think it would be though.
