For use on the side or tailgate?

Most require guy ropes going over the bus and some are unstable once the vehicle has been moved.

A VW forum may have a best buy option.

I decided on a:

Very big awning. Fairly easy to erect. we have used it in some fairly high winds and while it flapped around a bit it stayed secure. We bought it from the company at link and they were very helpful and had lots of advice.

I went for a Khyam Motordome Sleeper
http://www.khyam.co.uk/detail.asp?p=791&product=Motordome%20Sleeper

Not cheap but so easy to erect and take down. I can do it alone in about 2 minutes flat! Excellent quality aswell

We bought the Kyam Motor Dome Sleeper and have used it a couple of times this year. It really is Easy up Easy Down. You can erect it and take it down on your own. Its far superior than the last movelite awning we had.

A tip I came across. Dont just fix the awning to the rail on the van with figure of eight piping. What I did was purchase some awning rail from a caravan shop and attached it to the windout awing on the van with short self tapper screws and araldite glue for extra strength. It means you can pull up to the awning and dont have to worry about getting your parking right or adjusting how far you are from the awning to get a tight fit with the awning tunnel. You just pull up as far away or as near as you want, jump out windout the sun canopy and attached your awning to the rail you have attached to the canopy casing. Then wind your canopy back in until you awning tunnel pulls tight and then drop your sun canopy legs and adjust to fit the height of the awing tunnel and peg your canopy legs down. This means you can have your awning as far away from your van as you want to the full extent of your sun canopy. You then have a sitting area and sleeping area in your awning a huge covered area to lounge in if the weather is OK and your van at the end of it all and to get from one to the other you dont get wet when its raining.

The rail screwed/glued to the sun canopy cover

Used at night with awning tiedowns on the sun cannpy in case it got windy through the night
