PostSubject: Alarm to prevent theft of battery   Tue Jul 15, 2014 1:34 am

Hi all,

going away for a while and want to disconnect the battery to minimise the chance of it going flat. Problem is, that when I remove the negative terminal from the battery, an audible chirping alarm comes on. I have no idea where this alarm is located. I figure if the battery goes flat, then the alarm may come on driving the neighbours crazy. It's not overly loud, but it's annoying.

Is this alarm a standard feature or has the previous owner installed it to prevent theft of the battery?

Any idea where to look for it?

What have other people done when going away for a while to prevent the battery from going flat?

regards,

Werner

Hasn't anyone disconnected their battery before? Smile  Any chirps emanating from the battery area?

I'm wondering that if the previous owner installed some sort of anti-theft alarm, what would be providing the power to it and how long would that power source last?  scratch

Any ideas anyone?

Yes, disconnected the battery, no chirps, probably an anti theft alarm that has a rechargeable standby battery installed

Thanks, Tony, that info helps a lot. Now to find where the little so-and-so is hiding....

I had a bit of a look and it turns out that it's the siren for the car alarm that is emitting the noise. Any interruption of power to the siren and it goes off. The backup battery must be in there somewhere. Attempts to remove the siren resulted in it going off as soon as the first screw was removed suggesting that maybe the body is an earth connection??

I think from memory there is something which you can use to deactivate the alarm but I can't remember where it's located.

The whole thing is frustrating, particularly as I need to replace the siren anyway as it has some water damage to it.

Any ideas?

The back up battery will probably only last half an hour or so, cover in with cloths and wait for it to run down!

May not be such a bad idea, Tony.

Update : I contacted a dealer who instals car alarms and they said that I should have a key which can turn the siren off by turning a slot on the back of the siren.

Ive found kthe ey and have successfully turned the siren off. Tested by removing the negative terminal from the battery and no howling  cheers
