PostSubject: Large Fans below engine   Tue Mar 10, 2015 12:36 am

There are 2 large fans on the bottom of my 1997 Hiace Super Custom 2L Turbo diesel that are mounted on what looks like a 2nd radiator. The fans aren't hooked up, and if I do, they will blow a fuse after a few hours. Looking on here, someone said that they had something to do with the aircon, but my aircon blows cold whether they are running or not. Any clues?

Yes one or both are coolers for the A/C. If you have 4WD I have heard that their could be a secondary coolant rad.

Take it to an A/C specialist.

Clive, I think a secondary coolant radiator, in addition to aircon, is correct. On a long hill climb that I travel frequently the two large fans can be heard cutting in even if the aircon is switched off. Mine is a 4WD model.

I took a second look and sure enough there is a second coolant rad tied in with the main one, then above that is the a/c condenser with it's own fan that turns on when the a/c is turned on. I wired in an old headlight relay to the coolant fan with a switch on the dash, now if it gets warm I can just turn the fan on manually.
