You can out the raduattcap, pressure cap, halfway to allow air in.

The first time I usually do without the cap even. And keep throwing coolant in.

Also rev it a bit and open the heater.

Thanks.  Seems I have a leak somewhere anyway and looks like coolant.  Just as well I hadn't put the covers back on underneath.

Seems to be leaking bottom corner of the radiator, just under the drain plug. Looks like it has been leaking for a while, but probably blocked with crud. When I flushed the system through I guess I have dislodged the crud.

Just taken it for a 20km spin to get water flowing through the system. Hopefully it will seal as I doubt I got all the crud out. Really don't want to radweld it and really really don't want to attempt to change the rad! Too wet for further investigation today.

After changing the coolant and thermostat and cap, temperature gauge sits firmly in the middle of the gauge, previously it struggled to get decent temperature. Old stat looks ok, although I haven't tested it.

yes, it's gone in the bin. looked fine, wasn't open, but maybe the spring has lost it's oomph.

Anyhow, rad still leaking. Got a recommendation for a sealant from the RAC chap next door, will see if that works.

With the fuel filter issue try this.
unbolt the filter and its screwin mounting section from the Main Bracket that's attached to the cars body. .
next, turn the unit upside down, line up the bolt holes and sit it down on top.
hey presto, now you can easily gets some purchase on the filter and unsrew it.

Thanks, that's a good tip. Sadly mine was so seized, even with the mount gripped in the vice it would not turn (with the aid of a filter grip). I got it out using a screwdriver and my biggest hammer to get it to turn.

[quote="TwentyOneThirtyFive"]
Clocked up 5k km since we bought our van now, so time to give it a good service.

Got hold of a couple of manuals, which don't seem to cover the LH119 variant, not that they seem much use in terms of part numbers anyway...

So using toyodiy.com I think I've managed to work out most things, but not sure yet about the oil filter.

Oil filter: 15600-41010 - Is this the correct part number?  I don't see genuine Toyota anywhere?  Probably go MANN unless anyone can suggest better?  Do I really need the special tool?  I'm guessing so.
Sump plug washer: 90430-18029 - eBay
Fuel Filter:23303-64010 - Genuine Toyota available (Burrows)
Air Filter: 17801-54100 - plenty of these on eBay.  Can't see genuine Toyota, will probably go for Bosch.

Are they correct? Anything else I need?

Oil will be semi-synthetic, but getting a bit confused over spec.  10w-40 okay?  or something else.

Will also change the coolant.  Toyota long life red?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm not a great mechanic Smile

Hi, thought I'd post some photo's and part nos. of bits whilst servicing my van.

Windscreen wipers - top of photo Genuine Toyota Optifit (front wiper) part no. 85220-YZZAN :- note - old wipers actually pictured in photo,  but the new were exactly the same. Came with the 2 fixing screws.

Middle of photo shows Genuine Toyota rear wiper part no. 85220-12601  came without the fixing screws but can just use the old.

Bottom of photo shows DriveTec aftermarket rear wiper that has a plastic part that comes with it which attaches to make the fixing arm. Comes with screws also. Note :- this aftermarket wiper is not as well built as the original wiper frame which is all metal, also the rubber blade is not the same and not transferable onto the original rear wiper.

Genuine Toyota Oil filter. Part no. 90915-YZZJ4
plastic seal still on the end.

Genuine Toyota Oil drain plug washer. Part no. 90080-43037

Out of interest, what lengths are the blades? I recently bought new blades, but got quite inconsistent recommendations on what lengths were required and wasn't sure if the ones on the van were original.

Hi, The Genuine Toyota Optifit front wiper blade length is 475mm

The Genuine Toyota rear wiper blade length is 425 mm

The DriveTec aftermarket rear blade length is only 406mm

As time goes on you may find it useful to buy an assorted metric box of copper crush washers (eBay etc). I bought one for my scooter (The gearbox has two sizes (drain+fill) and the oil drain has a 3rd), and this has fitted the Hiace Diff drain and fill and the Hiace A340E box drain too, it's just massively handy to be able to reach over, select a shiny new washer and use that.

Then you'll be able to change all your other fluids a bit easier.
Good idea to go genuine Toyota filter - the official ones are IME better than a lucky dip aftermarket, especially for not draining back.

Genuine Toyota Thermostat for my van part no. 90916-03099
When i first looked at it the top of the thermostat it looked like it was rusted but after reading online have found out that it's not rust but some sort of browny red colour coating. Google "Kuzeh coating" and you'll see. Was a relief to find that out.

Genuine air filter part no. 17801-54100-8T replaced on my van with part no. 17801-54100-83 which supersedes it. There was no.problem fitting the new filter, same size as the older one.
Photo of both parts together.

Hi, it cost me £36.37 inc vat from my local Toyota dealer (Yeomans in Worthing) they had it in stock.
Not sure if it will be the same part no. as your van as it's turbo. Easy enough to have a look though. Access to it is underneath just behind the drivers wheel. Fly nut undoes a metal cap (Wd40 it first) then another fly nut undoes the filter.  The filter no. should be written on it (hopefully it's an original part) if not you'll have to find it out by cross referencing/parts search tool.
Maybe able to get the part for cheaper here??
