Downpipe. The one with the flexi section

That part has part number 17401-54093 and is only 155 Euro in the parts system. A Toyota dealership will always add something to the price, but all in all it does not seem so expensive to me. Try the dealership with that number to see if it is orderable and for what price.

This is only true for the 2.4 and 2.8 engines, not the 3.0 turbo engine.

Hi again,
Previous thread around this query- the link with the images is dead now, though.

Exhaust system diagram:

Klarius replacement part is TY363D- fits 2.4D & 2.8 ("3L") diesels.

The back box is a TY364C for a LWB version (eg LH119). It's 300mm too short for a SLWB (eg LH129) but that can be fixed by cutting and welding in a short section of straight pipe. I don't know about the SWB versions. The 2.4 was available in the UK, so they can find parts for it, whereas the 2.8 was not... Similarly, the SLWB versions were not officially sold here, so parts are not easily identified.

As above, though, my experience was that these didn't last long, so if you plan to keep the van for a while it would be worth finding a local stainless steel exhaust specialist and asking for them to make one to fit- rough prices, from memory, for a complete system were about 800 (OE, think that was just the parts) from Toyota, about 300 (fitted?) from Kwik-Fit, though I then needed to pay extra (50?) to a local garage to modify and fit it to my SuperLong, and about 450 (again, fitted) for the stainless system.

Cheers,
W.

Guessing that this is the same request as on the HiAce facebook page, but if not - this search looks like it brings up the part as being superseded with part number 17401-54094 (Hiace4wd, does this show up in your parts system?), so it would be best to check on the phone. 124 if it is correct.

WG - how does the stainless sound? I fitted a SS to my old VW and it made a dreadful noise, really boomy, so I am a bit nervous of fitting one now.

@2135, it shows up for Hiaces with 3L engine 109/119/129 chassis lengths. It seems interchangable and it shows that it has an extra box added inline. Perhaps it is less noisy because of that extra box?

Anyway, for that downpipe piece the prices seem to be low so I would just replace it with Toyota original. Kwikfit and others won't be cheaper or better.
The original ones will last long so you don't have to look at stainless steel in my opinion.
However, the long exhaust part is more expensive.

The initial installation was a bit loud- not boomy but not as quiet as I had wanted- these guys (SS custom exhaust makers) mostly fit "performance" exhausts, so they are usually aiming for free flow & a "sporty" note... The biggest silencer they had was smaller than the original Toyota unit & it showed.

After a couple of years the baffles in the box came loose and it got worse, so I took it back to them (lifetime warranty) and they replaced the silencer and fitted an extra expansion box ahead of it. I'm happy enough with it, now...

We do a fair bit of motorway driving and I think the other noise- wind, engine on the left, tyres to the right is more of an issue than the exhaust!

Cheers,
W.

I'm wondering if this downpipe version with a box in it would make it more silent. Or too little difference to notice.

I changed from Mud tyres to normal Toyo all terrains to keep the noise down, and we did some sound isolation. I'm not sure how much the exhaust does.

Thanks chaps.

The Hiace is a noisy beastie for sure, but the exhaust is a noticable part of that. I bandaged a hole in the exhaust recently and you could certainly hear the difference.

Haha, of course it is noisy in the exhaust when there is a hole in the exhaust. Any car becomes noisy that way.

But given an exhaust which is solid, how much of the noise will be made by the exhaust?
I think this is more an issue for the rear seats / cargo area.
We didn't put in a heavy floor in the cargo area, just some simple isolation. Sometimes I think it would've helped.
