PostSubject: Off roading with my 1991 Hiace LH107 4WD automatic in Canada   Thu Nov 02, 2017 10:46 pm

This past summer I finally travelled a road in British Columbia, Canada that has been on my list.
It's a sort of famous section of road called the Grey Creek Forest Service Road. It starts at a town called Grey Creek in the Kootenays on the East bank of Kootenay Lake and goes to Kimberley, BC. Maybe 100 kms long in total.
It's only open about 3 months out of the year because the rest of the time it could be under snow. It's an higher alpine road.
It's not really hard core but does have its fun sections.
It was fairly warm in July here so I was worried a little about overheating. There is a 15 km section that averages 9% incline on a slow (maximum 30kms / hr) gravel road with switchbacks.
No problem.
In low range I could go all day without overheating.
It seems that this is what my Hiace was really built for.
It was a trooper. I am impressed.
And I was pretty loaded with 2 teenage kids, a dog, a roof top tent and camping gear for a couple of weeks.

A few pictures are attached. (hopefully)
Cheers,
Roman

Great pics! Yeah the vans can do this fine.
We also take these kind of roads with our camper van, and in fact a bit rougher ones.
We raised the van, but still it can be annoying going downhill because the front end travels inwards and you might hit something. Uphill is easier Smile

I have been impressed with its capabilities off road. Another inch or two of clearance would be helpful.
Snow will be the next test.

How do you like the roof tent? I wasn't sure the roof / racks would support the weight.

I have 2 rails supporting the folded up tent and a third one half way when the tent is set up.
Very solid actually.
Sonetimes I anchor a custom ladder to my front mounted trailer hitch.
Then the tent is indestructible.
I have 2 knuckleheaded teenage boys that I have to protect it against. (-;
I am happy with the tent. It is a Tepui Ayer rooftop tent. Sleeps just two.
If you get one buy the optional anti condensation mat. IMHO it is critical.
Cheers

By the way the Hiace is great in the snow.
Especially doing donuts in 2 wheel drive. Maybe that is a
Canadian thing?
Great snow rated tires really help.
