PostSubject: super custom battery problem   Sun Mar 23, 2008 1:26 pm

Hi, the battery on my super custom keeps discharging. The battery appears to be charging at 13.5v and I can find no voltage leak. I'm wondering if it even has the correct battery fitted. Does anyone know what battery a 2.8 super custom should have?

Tony.

How long does it take to discharge, and from what starting voltage?

Maybe it is not charging up. The 13.5v will be off the alternator, but does not mean it is actually charging. When you have driven it far enough to normally considered it charged, what voltage is at the battery terminals without it running?

Could have a dead cell.

My 3 litre SC has two batteries. Type of battery will vary in different parts of the world, but needs good capacity to crank a high compression diesel.

voltage at terminals not running is 12.8v. I think the battery is too small at 60 Amp/hrs I dont know what the cca is but probably not enough.

I think you need to look at the starting power - should be AT LEAST 500amps. I have a Halfords HCB 072 battery ( which according to H is too small! ) rated at 550amps which seems to work well. It's about 10" across x 7" wide x 8"high. The one in use at the moment is rated at 600+amps and about 1" bigger across & wide. As a general rule of thumb it should cost about 100 Shocked
To upgrade a previous post: I've flattened both batteries down to about 5.5 volts, and it took about a week to charge them up to 6.5/7.0 with my modern charger. I was about to throw them away when I had an idea....... Idea I borrowed my brother's old charger ( ALWAYS charges at 6amps! ) and gave them a good belt of that. After a couple of days they were over 12v, so I put them on modern trickle charge. Now the 'big' battery is in the motor with no problems and the Halfords is at 12.77v 3 weeks after charging. Very Happy Just goes to show that sometimes brutal is best!

Not at all. I love loads of music from Evanescence to some Kate Bush, Eva Cassidy to Bob Marley.

Guess its being a d.j. and playing songs for other people ... helps you appreciate a wide range.
