 HIACE REAR BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT (per Toyota Instructions)

PostSubject: HIACE REAR BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT (per Toyota Instructions)   Fri Oct 10, 2008 8:47 am

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE WHEEL
2. REMOVE BRAKE DRUM
Release the parking brake lever, and remove the brake drum HINT:
If the drake drum is stuck to the rear axle flange due to rust, insert bolts with a nominal diameter of S mm (0.31 in.) info the 2 service holes. Tighten the bolts equally to lift the brake drum a little at a time. To prevent the brake arum from being damaged, do not apply excessive force. Instead, apply a lubricant to the rear axle flange. Once the brake drum lifts slightly, loosen the bolts and push the brake drum in, Repeat this process until the brake drum can be removed.
3. REMOVE FRONT SHOE
(a) Using pliers disconnect the return spring from the front and rear shoes.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the wheel cylinder boot.
(b) Using pliers, remove the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring and pin,
(c) Disconnect the anchor spring from the front shoe and remove the front shoe. Remove the anchor spring from the rear shoe.
4. REMOVE REAR SHOE AND ADJUSTER
(a) Using pliers remove the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring and pin.
(bi Using a screwdriver, disconnect the parking brake cable from the
anchor plate.
(c- Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear shoe, adjuster with the return spring,
5. REMOVE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTING LEVER AND PARKING
BRAKE LEVER
{&) Using needle-nose pliers, remove the adjusting lever spring
(b) Using a screwdriver, remove the E-ring. and automatic adjusting lever

(C) Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer and parking brake lever.
INSTALLATION
1. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE TO FOLLOWING
PARTS
(a) Backing plate and brake shoe contact points
(b) Anchor plate and brake shoe contact points
(c) Adjuster bolt
(d! Adjuster and brake shoe contact points
2. INSTALL AUTOMATIC ADJUSTING LEVER AND PARKING
BRAKE LEVER
(a) Using needle-nose pliers, install the parking brake lever with a
new C-washer.
(b) Using needle-nose pliers, install the automatic adjusting lever
with a new E-ring.
;c Using needle-nose pliers, install the adjusting lever spring.
3. INSTALL REAR SHOE AND ADJUSTER
a) Using needle-nose pliers, connect the parking brake cable to the
parking brake fever,
b Set the adjuster with the return spring to the rear shoe.
(c) Using a screwdriver, connect the parking brake cable to the
anchor plate.
Set the rear shoe in place with the end of the
(d) shoo inserted in
the wheel cylinder and other end m the anchor plate.
(e) Using pliers, install the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring and pin
4. INSTALL FRONT SHOE
(a) Install the anchor spring between the front and rear shoes.
(b) Set the front shoe in place with the end of the shoe inserted in
the wheel cylinder and adjuster in place.
(c) Using pliers, install the 2 cups, shoe hold-down spring and pin.
(d) Using pliers, connect the return spring to the front and rear shoes
NOTICE:
Do not damage the wheel cylinder boot.
5. CHECK BRAKE INSTALLATION
Check that each part is installed properly.
